What ONE THING do you think gives a woman the “WOW” factor?

Willingness to Have Deep Connections

What three female celebrities do you think we could learn from – and what ONE sentence lesson do they teach us?

Ellen DeGeneres – Fun, Authentic, and Love
Oprah Winfrey – Inspirational, Contribution and Growth
Julia Roberts – Beauty, Elegance, Quiet Power

What is the most important lesson you learned from YOUR Mom?

Being understanding and giving.

If women could instantly emulate ONE trait, habit or skill set that YOU possess, which trait, habit or skill set should it be?

Open to learning and growth and corrections without invalidating self

What ONE success tip or strategy can you leave us with?

Seeing every individual as who they truly are, deep down we are love and if you come from compassion and understanding, you will know that whatever they are doing to you which may seems very unpleasant or against you is just their fear beneath.  Having said that, when you speak to the individual, be interested in who they are and listen… Building powerful long-term relationships with another human being to me is the very reason of our existence.

Woman Who Wows: Stephanie Burns http://www.womenwhowow.com/woman-who-wows-stephanie-burns/ Mon, 20 Jan 2014 21:19:18 +0000 http://www.womenwhowow.com/?p=2428 stephanieburnsRare is the woman-in-business who WON’T recognize the name — or at least the business name — of this week’s Woman Who WOWS feature: Stephanie Burns of www.chic-ceo.com. Chic CEO has been named in the Top 10 Entrepreneurial Websites for Women, Top 10 Best Websites for Millennial Women and Top 10 Best Websites for Women Entrepreneurs by FORBES.com.

Chic CEO — now a nationally recognized brand and online resource for female entrepreneurs — began as Stephanie’s business plan assignment while pursuing her MBA. My favorite part of the Chic CEO story is how it was funded: with Stephanie’s winnings on a little show called, Wheel of Fortune! =) I love the story, the site and the transparency and boldness of its founder. I’m excited this week to proclaim the obvious: Stephanie Burns of Chic CEO is most certainly a Woman Who WOWS.

What ONE THING do you think gives a woman the “WOW” factor?

Transparency. Quick connection is made in the “me too’s” – I think when someone tries to put on a persona of having it all together or having all of the answers, there is a divide created between you and your audience. Being open with your community about your journey, challenges, struggles, triumphs and achievements really allow others to connect with you and relate to you.

What three female celebrities do you think we could learn from – and what ONE sentence lesson do they teach us?

Meryl Streep – Embrace aging gracefully, being smart and sexy.
Natalie Portman – Class never goes out of style.
Tina Fey – Always say yes, and figure it out later.

What is the most important lesson you learned from YOUR Mom?

There isn’t a person on this earth that works harder than Mary Kay Burns. And that’s the truth – no one. She’s an ER nurse (she saves a life every single day), volunteer nurses in remote areas, hikes the Grand Canyon, does Century Bike rides, and the list goes on. She’s taught me that I am the only person responsible for achieving my goals and learning from my failures. My work ethic is a direct reflection of my mother’s tenacity for new experiences, caring for others and commitment to excellence. She’s an amazing woman.

If women could instantly emulate ONE trait, habit or skill set that YOU possess, which trait, habit or skill set should it be?

Tenacity. Nothing beats persistence – not even intelligence.

What ONE success tip or strategy can you leave us with?

Just start. Everything will change in a few months anyway – don’t wait until everything is “perfect” because it never will be. GO!

Woman Who Wows: Meg Cadoux Hirshberg http://www.womenwhowow.com/woman-who-wows-meg-cadoux-hirshberg/ Fri, 10 Jan 2014 20:20:02 +0000 http://www.womenwhowow.com/?p=2419 megsmile2Meg Cadoux Hirshberg is the initial reason I fell in love with Inc. Magazine. For five years, she wrote a column for the magazine called “Balancing Acts” that dealt with that delicate intersection between business and life. Immediately, I respected her as a woman and writer, but also as a wife.  (She’s been married for 30 years to Gary, who owns Stonyfield Yogurt.) Smart, savvy, humble, and generous — Meg certainly embodies the spirit of Women Who WOW.  I encourage you to get a copy of her recent book, For Better or For Work: A Survival Guide for Entrepreneurs and Their Families.

What ONE THING do you think gives a woman the “WOW” factor?

Being comfortable in her own skin.

What three female celebrities do you think we could learn from – and what ONE sentence lesson do they teach us?

Hillary Clinton: She exemplifies perseverance. Michelle Obama: She is elegant, strong, clearly kind, and full of grace. Angelina Jolie: She has shown genuine and enduring commitment to the downtrodden of the world and has used her celebrity to bring attention to their plight.

What is the most important lesson you learned from YOUR Mom?

To distinguish between problems and troubles. Most challenges in life are problems-they may make you want to lean your head on your desk and moan, but they are ultimately solveable. Trouble is the real deal: death, serious illness, painful divorce. Remembering this distinction helps me on a daily basis.

If women could instantly emulate ONE trait, habit or skill set that YOU possess, which trait, habit or skill set should it be?

I am a good listener. I think that’s important in life, for both men and women.

What ONE success tip or strategy can you leave us with?

Try not to judge yourself harshly. Most women are their own worst critics.

Woman Who Wows: Peggy Sijswerda http://www.womenwhowow.com/woman-who-wows-peggy-sijswerda/ Wed, 08 Jan 2014 10:51:43 +0000 http://www.womenwhowow.com/?p=2321

untitledPeggy Sijswerda wouldn’t know this, but I’ve been a long time fan of her work, having first learned of her when she brought Tidewater Women magazine to our area.  She was the first person I ever heard describe herself as a travel writer, which I thought was (and think is)  just hands-down amazing.  Her work has been featured in “little” publications like Everyday with Rachael Ray, Parents magazine, Ritz-Carlton magazine, and many more. Most recently, she created Tidewater Family magazine — which, like Tidewater Women, will give Hampton Roads business owners another intelligent, niched place to advertise.  Peggy is truly a Woman Who WOWS, and I’m excited to have her as our first feature of 2014.

What ONE THING do you think gives a woman the “WOW” factor?

Being true to herself. We can’t “wow” anyone (including ourselves) if we are not living an authentic life.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

My dad taught me to actively look for ways to make the world a better place, even just by doing small things, like holding the door for someone, smiling at strangers, or giving someone your shopping cart.

What is the most important lesson you learned from YOUR Mom?

I remember when I was in college, my mom wrote letters (remember those?) and instead of saying “Study hard!” she always ended her letters with “Have fun!” I’ve always tried to make room for fun in my life—because if life isn’t fun, then that’s a clear message from the universe that you need to rethink your priorities.

If women could instantly emulate ONE trait, habit or skill set that YOU possess, which trait, habit or skill set should it be?

Yikes, “instantly emulating me” sounds like a script for a horror movie. But I guess a trait that I am most proud of is honesty. Once a friend said that she admired me because I was never devious in my thinking and I always mean what I say.

What ONE success tip or strategy can you leave us with?

It sounds cliché, but it’s simple: always do your best.

Woman Who Wows: Barbara Winter http://www.womenwhowow.com/woman-who-wows-barbara-winter/ Mon, 25 Mar 2013 12:00:18 +0000 http://www.womenwhowow.com/?p=2248 BarbaraWinter (smaller)Being able to highlight Barbara Winter as an “official” Woman Who WOWS is a huge honor for us! Although she didn’t know it at the time, she was by my side at the very beginning of my entrepreneurial journey! Her book, Making A Living Without A Job was the first business book I ever read — and, to this day, the business book I’ve re-read most often. She’s practical and inspirational, fun and strategic.  Do yourself a favor and visit her at  www.joyfullyjobless.com.

What ONE THING do you think gives a woman the “WOW” factor?

Conscious devotion to creating her best life.

What three female celebrities do you think we could learn from – and what ONE sentence lesson do they teach us?

The female celebrities that I admire most aren’t performers, but writers and my short list would include Anne Lamott, Mary Oliver and JK Rowling. The great lesson from these women is to keep creating whether anyone is paying attention or not.

What is the most important lesson you learned from YOUR Mom?

I learned a cautionary lesson from watching her: low self-esteem leads to a life of sadness and frustration.

If women could instantly emulate ONE trait, habit or skill set that YOU possess, which trait, habit or skill set should it be?

Stay wildly curious and share what you learn along the way.

What ONE success tip or strategy can you leave us with?

“Work with the Willing” became my mantra a few years ago and it’s made everything I do more joyful and effective.

Woman Who Wows: Pam Guyer http://www.womenwhowow.com/woman-who-wows-pam-guyer/ Mon, 18 Mar 2013 12:00:47 +0000 http://www.womenwhowow.com/?p=2232 19844_1313325797116_2293853_nPam Guyer is the mother of three… a published author… and a “kick-sass” business woman. But the thing I love about her most? That she admits to still having a “crush” on her husband! Not many women can say that — and mean it! Seriously excited to feature Pam’s wisdom here, because she’s definitely a Woman Who WOWS! (Find more about her here: www.hippmoms.com)

What ONE THING do you think gives a woman the “WOW” factor?

A woman that lives on purpose and owns herself!  She knows what it is she wants, and she creates her life by design (not default).   She does not follow the crowd, or take her “lot” in life.  She casts a vision for her life and based on that vision, she creates the opportunity to work and play as she chooses.

What three female celebrities do you think we could learn from – and what ONE sentence lesson do they teach us?

Oprah:  Live Your Best Life.   Oprah teaches us how to listen to our gut, how to discover our purpose and how to follow that vision and dream and inner voice that whispers our calling.

Maria Shriver:  Reinvent Yourself.  Maria knows from experience that we need to reinvent to grow, change, adapt and thrive.  She teaches us to be empowered and build ourselves so that we can build our future.

Rita Davenport (not a celebrity but is a National Speaker).  What you think about you bring about! Rita teaches women how to increase their level of expectation and to “mind their mind”.
To expect great things, visualize what you want, and take action to get there.   (www.ritadavenport.com)

What is the most important lesson you learned from YOUR Mom?

Your attitude in life will dictate your outcome.  You not only have the ability to choose your attitude, you also have the ability to influence others with a positive attitude.  Accept what is, realize it could always be worst, and be positive in every situation, look for the lesson and look for the opportunity, don’t focus on the problem, that is wasted time and energy.

If women could instantly emulate ONE trait, habit or skill set that YOU possess, which trait, habit or skill set should it be?

My heart, it is my brand.  I deeply care about making a difference, and I have a heart to inspire others, build others up and bring out the best in them.  I would want to see more women under the influence of my heart.  I know we would create even more incredible women leaders and synergy with the caring & positive spirit that I share.

What ONE success tip or strategy can you leave us with?

Be authentic to who you are, and work on becoming an even better you.  When you focus more on becoming a better person, that will radiate and be the difference maker in the value proposition you bring to the world.    Having a plan and taking consistent action are necessary, the difference maker is you authentic self and how that adds value to your product or services.

Amy

Amy Cosper is the Editor in Chief of Entrepreneur Magazine. She has been described as fun,  quirky, surprising and uber-authentic.  Always impressively authentic. And ballsy.  Whether she’s riding a four-wheeler, her  new Ducati, or perhaps a horse, I have a feeling this girl’s ALWAYS in control.  And always ready to go a BIT further than the day before.  Since she took over as the Editor-in-Chief of Entrepreneur Magazine, the Editor’s Note has — consistently — been one of my favorite parts of the magazine.  This Woman Who WOWs is inspiring — and equipping — entrepreneurs all over the world and is definitely one to watch! Reach out to her on twitter at @EntMagazineAmy.

What ONE THING do you think gives a woman the “WOW” factor?

Self confidence and grace (ok, that’s 2, but they sort of go together)

What three female celebrities do you think we could learn from – and what ONE sentence lesson do they teach us?

Margaret Thatcher – grace, dignity, strength
Betty White – Self awareness
Angelina Jolie – wanderlust

What is the most important lesson you learned from YOUR Mom?

Don’t let ambition turn you into an asshole.

If women could instantly emulate ONE trait, habit or skill set that YOU possess, which trait, habit or skill set should it be?

Humor

What ONE success tip or strategy can you leave us with?

Know thyself, be present in the moment and let yourself make mistakes.
